GPS, or global positioning systems technology, is possible because of a group of 24 satellites orbiting the earth that are constantly relaying information to receivers on earth about the location (latitude and longitude) of a car or other vehicle with a transmitter. A GPS system can also tell how fast the vehicle is going and its direction of travel.
How helpful is GPS tracking information? It allows parents to know where their children are; it eliminates a lot of the worry when your kids are driving home from college. You know where they are at all times and when to expect them. Parents of teenagers never have to wonder if their son or daughter is where they said they would be. There are no more late night phone calls asking “Where are you?” Baby boomers can track their elderly parents, too, and make sure they are safe. When you know where your teenager or elderly parent is, you can also allow them to be more independent. Knowing they are being tracked also makes them more careful and less prone to take chances.
GPS tracking can be used to provide customer service at its finest. A fleet manager knows at once which of his drivers is closest to the customer who needs help. If a vehicle is making a delivery, he can tell the customer exactly when to expect the truck.
Employers using GPS tracking receive information on how fast each employee is driving, how long they remain immobile (taking a break), and if they are where they’re supposed to be. It can also monitor fuel usage based on how fast and far the employee is traveling and remind you when to schedule maintenance. GPS tracking eliminates the need for truckers to fill out driving logs.
Many insurance companies offer discounts for vehicles equipped with tracking systems.
